The holiday season was typically the six week period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Now, it pretty much starts at Halloween and lingers till about a week after New Year’s. When did it get form 6 weeks to 9 weeks!!!
Studies show, average adult gains five or more pounds during the holidays and that they hold on to that weight.
With Halloween candies, just a few days away and Diwali sweets not too far either– what can you do to prevent falling in the same trap year after year:
- Follow an 80/20 rule- Eat until about 80% full, eat healthy 80% of the week.
- Eat a healthy protein rich breakfast- this will keep you fuller and stave of the cravings. Recipe
- Eat probiotic rich foods–imbalance in gut bacteria can cause everything from weight gain, low immunity, moodiness, sugar cravings, to acne etc. Learn to make your own probiotic foods
- Follow a clean eating program– before and after the holidays- even if you were to lose a 3-4 lbs., it is a great opportunity to clean up and get rid of the excess before it becomes permanent.
- Sleep enough- not getting enough deep, restorative sleep can disrupt the balance of key hormones that control appetite. Sleep-deprived people may be hungrier than those who get enough rest each night.
- Be a picky eater- Survey the buffet spread before you fill you plate and choose the foods in the order of what you really want and not in the order of which they are served!!!
- Drink Cinnamon tea or Detox tea – This Mildly sweet tea with warming spices balances blood sugar and prevents those not needed sugar cravings.
- Use Essential Oils- blends like Slim and Sassy promote healthy metabolism and help manage hunger cravings. (need essential oils?)
Holidays are to celebrate the good times, connect with friends & family, and make memories for a lifetime not collect the weight. While enjoying foods is part of the celebration, attempt not to make it just about the food.
